The Edmonton Oilers were back at practice on Monday following their 6-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night.
The Oilers were initially scheduled to have a CBA mandated day off on Monday but that was moved to Wednesday.
Oilers head coach Todd McLellan says he talked to his leadership group after the game to see if they would be willing to swap days.
“I wanted us to get better,” says McLellan.” I wanted us to get prepared to play against Carolina. A team that a lot of similar traits to Buffalo. Practice was very productive. I think we improved in some areas.”
McLellan also noted that Benoit Pouliot would play on Tuesday despite being benched for the second and third periods of Sunday’s game.
“It’s unfortunate. I put myself in a bad situation and I paid for it, ” says Pouliot who took two first period penalties. “Todd and I had a brief discussion. It was to the point. I don’t even think we needed to talk. I knew what I did was obviously unacceptable. Tomorrow is a new day and I’m excited about that.”
The Oilers have also recalled goaltender Laurent Brossoit after Jonas Gustavsson was involved in a collision during Sunday’s game. Defenceman Matthew Benning has been sent down.
Other Oilers news from Monday: Captain Connor McDavid was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week. McDavid registered three goals and three assists in three games to beat out Leafs rookie Auston Matthews and Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo.
