We’re learning more about the incident in Bashaw 630CHED reported first Sunday morning.
Bashaw RCMP say they responded to the Bashaw Motor Inn at 1:15 a.m. Sunday after reports of a fire.
“All that’s really left standing is a white fence, that I’m told used to be the porch of the hotel, but it’s pretty much a pile of rubble,” Global News reporter Julia Wong said from the scene Sunday afternoon. “Everything’s been totally destroyed.”
Police don’t yet know if the fire is suspicious, or what started the fire. A listener told our newsroom Sunday morning that there was an explosion at the hotel. Police won’t confirm that at this time, but people in Bashaw told Global News they felt and heard an explosion as well before they rushed out and saw the fire.
“Flames reaching as high as perhaps 20, 30 feet,” Wong said. “They said it was over the tops of the trees right beside the hotel. They’re describing a massive blaze, a massive scene.”
Randy Thomas has lived beside #Bashaw Motor Inn for 6 yr. He was watching TV last night when he heard an explosion.

Three people were taken to hospital in serious conditions. Police are now working to determine whether all the people in the hotel are accounted for.
ATCO Gas has a team on scene assisting with the investigation. They have not confirmed an explosion either.
