Connor McDavid will play his first pre-season game for the Edmonton Oilers Wednesday night when they visit the Vancouver Canucks. McDavid will centre Milan Lucic and Jordan Eberle.
“Milan’s size and his ability to protect the puck, Connor’s speed, Eberle’s hands and finish, we want to see that come together. If they get that going, they can be a pretty potent line,” says head coach Todd McLellan of his expectations for that trio.
McDavid recently rejoined the Oilers after playing for North America at the World Cup of Hockey. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is also back with the Oilers but won’t play tonight.
On the blue line, Griffin Reinhart will play. He’s hoping to earn a full-time spot on the Oilers after suiting up for 29 games last season.
“I have to prove consistency in my game. When I play my best, I’m capable of playing and producing at this level. Another thing is closing quickly. I think I have to be a bit more aggressive,” says Reinhart.
In net, McLellan says Jonas Gustavsson will play the first two periods with Nick Ellis going in for the third.
The Oilers projected lineup is:
Catch the Oilers and Canucks on 630 CHED with the Face-off Show at 6:30pm. The game starts at 8pm.
The Oilers also trimmed their training camp roster to 43 players on Wednesday. The Oilers released forward Ryan Vesce from his PTO. They also assigned Ben Betker, Greg Chase, Braden Christoffer, Josh Currie, Ryan Hamilton, Kyle Platzer and Patrick Russell to Bakersfield.
