Hockey Night on Whyte takes place Saturday in Old Strathcona, with teams taking part in a 4-on-4 street hockey tournament.
Kids in need, businesses and community partners in the area will all be taking part.
Tim Onciul, the Chair of Hockey Night on Whyte says the tournament is really about bringing the community together.
“We’re looking to get an event that the youth can interact with the local community,” explains Onciul. “Be it business owners and just the community at large, to interact in a non-threatening and fun environment. And we thought ‘what’s more Canadian than a good old 4-on-4 hockey tournament.’”
Onciul adds they’ll be handing pretty unique medals to the winners.
“We wanted to get something that was a little original,” says Onciul. “The basic medals, we thought ‘we can do better than that.’ So one of our former presidents cooked up gold, silver and bronze cookie medals. So you get to enjoy the win in a way that doesn’t exactly last on your wall, but it’s great for your belly.”
He also says there will be a special guest at the event.
“We have Mark Fistric coming out,” says Onciul. “Mark was a defenceman with the Edmonton Oilers a couple of years ago. So he’s going to come out and help us kick the vent off with a ceremonial puck drop. So we’re really looking forward to that.”
As well as the 8 team hockey tournament there will also be a free barbecue.
The event takes place from 11 am to 5 pm Saturday afternoon on Whyte Avenue at 103rd Street. (km)
