Edmonton police have charged a local man in the deaths of an elderly couple at a home near 111th Street and 111th Avenue.
Edward Kyle Roberts, who is 31, was arrested at the scene Friday afternoon after reports of a suspicious person.
Once inside, officers found the bodies of Joao Nascimento, 93, and wife Maria, who was 81.
“It’s just traggic that something like this should happen to them in their latter years,” remarked EPS spokesman Scott Pattison. “They just were, it appears, randomly targeted by this individual.”
Roberts is accused of breaking into a nearby home and stealing a knife, then breaking into the elderly couple’s home and using it to murder them.
A medical examiner will still have to confirm the exact cause of their deaths.
Meanwhile, Roberts has been charged with two counts of first degree murder and two counts of break and enter, along with possession of a weapon and breach of recognizance.
It’s not known yet, when he will appear in court. (km/td/Global News)
