With Connor McDavid leading the way, seven members of the Edmonton Oilers christened the ice at Rogers Place on Thursday afternoon.
“It was pretty special to be on the ice,” says McDavid. “The building speaks for itself. Can’t wait to get going here.”
The Oilers were joined by some lucky Edmonton Minor Hockey players.
“The kids are all excited to come out. All of us are pretty pumped to get out here, too,” says centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. “Seeing how grand it is, the whole open section at one end is so cool. The massive jumbotron is a little bit like Colorado. It’s definitely going to be at the top of the league for buildings.”
The other Oilers who skated were Brandon Davidson, Iiro Pakarinen, Jonas Gustavsson, Andrej Sekera, and Mark Letestu.
“It feels a little bit incomplete. Need the fans in it,” says Letestu. “I’d love to be in here when it’s a full house and see how it can get rockin’.”
The Oilers will play their first pre-season game at Rogers Place on September 26. Their regular season opener is October 12 against Calgary. (jrw)
