A 13 minute video of a man spear hunting a bear has caused quite the stir in Alberta.
Josh Bowmar is the man in the video, which shows him hunting and killing a black bear near Swan Hills.
With the video, it already has the NDP government looking into spear hunting laws and new regulations for baiting black bears in the province.
Some jurisdictions across Canada, including the province of Ontario have banned baiting bears.
Miles Grove is the Superintendent of Operations at the Fish & Wildlife Enforcement Branch. He says baiting bears in Alberta is legal, but strictly regulated.
“It’s only allowed in certain parts of the province. There’s other further restrictions to include being certain distances from dwellings and provincial parks,” says Grove. “Hunters are also required to sign their baits with their name and information and to warn other people using the area.”
Grove also speaks on spear hunting in the province of Alberta.
“It’s very uncommon. In my experience, I’ve been an officer for over 25 years and this is the first time I’ve seen it on a video in Alberta. It’s definitely an uncommon practice.”
