The Wildrose party fully supports the NDP Private Members amendment which allows victims of domestic abuse to end a tenancy agreement early.
All MLA’s under the dome at the legislature, including the Wildrose, voted in favor of the Safer Spaces for Victims of Domestic Violence amendment last November.
However, Opposition Human Services Critic MLA Angela Pitt says there are still hurdles that need to be cleared. She points to a justice system that is, “clogged with delays.”
Pitt also says that women, “too often do not know where to turn for resources and support.”
The Residential Tenancies Amendment Act passed unanimously through the legislature last November and went into effect on Tuesday.
The act requires an emergency protection order, peace bond or statement from a certified professional to be presented to the property owner. Government figures show 1064 emergency protection orders were issued from April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016.
