The province’s police watch-dog has been called to investigate after a deadly police pursuit in Cold Lake.
It began with a man allegedly drunk and brandishing a knife during a fight at a 7-Eleven, just after 5:30 p.m., Saturday.
Officers arrived at the scene to find the man had already driven away in an SUV.
Another officer then spotted the suspect vehicle driving erratically on Highway 28.
He says he hit his flashing lights, but the driver refused to stop, with the officer eventually losing sight of the SUV as it headed eastbound on 16th Avenue in Cold Lake.
The next thing he saw was the SUV crumpled in the ditch after a serious collision with a pickup truck.
The suspect was dead, with a family in the truck — including a 3-year-old child — left with minor injuries.
The Mounties say the family had been belted in, adding the deceased suspect was a 36-year-old man from Cold Lake, but his name will not be released.
While the Mounties investigate the lead-up to the chase, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is now tasked with investigating what happened after that. (td)
