How many times, while watching a TV show have you heard the term “burner phone”?
These are pre-paid phones you can use and then just throw away.
They are linked to various crimes and terrorism where perpetrators want to stay anonymous.
They were used for 9/11 and the Paris attacks.
When you buy a pre-paid phone here or in the U-S you do not need to identify yourself, but that could be about to change.
Congresswoman Jackie Speier, from San Francisco, is behind a bill to have everyone buying a phone in the USA provide identification.
Don’t we give up a little privacy in the name of safety? Isn’t that what those sometimes tedious airport security checks are all about?
Anyone interested in safety, with nothing to hide, should have no problem showing some picture ID.
It would seem like a no-brainer, but various civil libertarians are opposed, citing privacy rights.
Would you support a similar bill in Canada, or would you like to keep this legal loophole open for drug traffickers and terrorists and, as Speier says, even modern day slavery?
Let me know what you think.
