A Canadian booster his entire life, 84-year-old Mel Hurtig has passed away.
Hurtig, born and raised in Edmonton, published the Canadian Encyclopedia in 1985 after seeing libraries across the country full of American history books. With funding assistance from the Alberta government, Hurtig oversaw the writing and publishing of the encyclopedia, which sold 150,000 copies in its first six months.
That same year, 1985, Hurtig formed the Council of Canadians, and as his daughter said “He lived his whole life trying to teach Canadians about themselves.”
Mel Hurtig died in Vancouver Wednesday due to complications from pneumonia.
