Alberta Health Services has named a new president and CEO.
Dr. Verna Yiu, who has been the interim president and CEO since January 2016, will fill the roll.
AHS say they looked at over 70 qualified applicants over a four month process. Yiu was once the vice-president, quality, and Chief Medical officer for AHS and is a pediatric nephrologist.
She says AHS offers an unprecedented opportunity to evolve healthcare.
“We are Canada’s only fully integrated provincial health system,” says Yiu. “We have an opportunity right here in Alberta to focus on improving the quality of health care, and of ensuring that no matter where you live in Alberta, that you’re going to receive the best possible care.”
In a statement, Health Minister Sarah Hoffman says she’s very pleased Dr. Yiu has been appointed to the role.
“My goal is to make sure Albertans get the right care, in the right place, at the right time, by the right provider,” says Hoffman. “Achieving this goal requires strong leaders who are committed to working together to ensure we have a stable health system that remains on solid fiscal footing for years to come. Dr. Yiu has proven herself such a leader. I look forward to continuing to work in partnership with both Dr. Yiu and with AHS Board Chair Linda Hughes over the coming years.”
Yiu’s appointment is for five years, with a salary of $573,841 annually, but could go longer. (twd/scb)
