Integra Air is postponing scheduled service between Edson and Calgary for the time being.
The town’s Steve Bethge says ticket sales just are not there with a struggling economy.
“There’s less people going on trips and there’s less business trips down to Calgary, so I think that’s really the biggest factor in this — is the fact that we just don’t have the money to spend right now,” explained Bethge. “So once that uncertainty changes, we’ll have a lot more potential for more air service in town.”
He says the Town of Edson remains hopeful that once business picks up in the oil and gas sector the seats will be easier to fill.
“We’re always looking at options, so we’ll be in touch with Integra Air, we’ll be in touch with other carriers that could potentially have interest in coming in. I know we’ve spoken to WestJet in the past and Air Canada, but the timing wasn’t right for them as well.”
Bethge says they’re also expanding their parking lot at the airport and making it more feasible for airlines to come in. (td)
