The long weekend’s much-needed rain must be welcome to local green-thumbs. Especially since nominations are now open for Edmonton’s annual “Front Yards in Bloom” competition.
Gardeners are encouraged to help beautify their yards, with several awards ranging from Public Spaces, to General excellence, Edible Yards, and Natural Yards.
Councillor Mike Nickel says the City is also working on a new Commercial Spaces category, and that’s thanks to new sponsors.
“So we’re trying to make this even bigger and better. We’ve grown this program at least 20% in terms of participation and revenue year-over-year for the last couple of years, and that’s largely in thanks to the business community that’s come on board.”
Nickel says there’s a lot that’s new this year, besides just categories and sponsors:
“We have a new video that’s going out to movie theatres.”
Nickel says he has a small part in it, along with a couple of co-stars.
“You’ll see Buzzy the Bee, and you’ll see me, talking about Front Yards in Bloom.” he says, laughing. “And my hat. You’ll see me in my wonderful hat.”
