A month ago Edmonton Police warned about a powerful new drug that had just started showing up in Alberta.
Now, the Calgary Medical Examiner’s office is reporting the first death from an overdose of W-18.
The drug is many times more powerful than fentanyl, and the ME says they found it in the system of a 35-year-old man found dead in a hotel in south Calgary in March. There was heroin and drug paraphernalia in the room, along with an unused Naloxone kit.
He leaves behind a common-law wife and an infant daughter.
Four kilograms of W-18 was seized by Edmonton Police late last year in the first bust of it in the province. Police say this drug is particularly concerning because it can be hidden in other types of drugs. (kdr)
