The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will be looking into the death of a 47 year old man early Thursday morning in an Edmonton Police Services cell block.
ASIRT says the man was arrested for theft and two breaches of bail conditions, just after midnight. They say he was intoxicated when he was placed in the cell block. At 3 AM, he was found on the floor, unconscious.
Efforts to revive him failed, and he was pronounced dead in hospital. An autopsy done Thursday was not able to determine the cause of his death, pending toxicology tests.
ASIRT will be focusing on the officers involvement with the man, and what took place prior to his death. (eb)
