The province has opened an additional debit card pickup location in Edmonton for evacuees from the Fort McMurray wildfire.
Added to the Butterdome location, evacuees can now pick up debit cards at NAIT, in the north lobby. Starting Friday, pick up hours will be from 8 AM to 8 PM through next Thursday. Next Friday, the hours will be from 8 AM until noon. There are also two locations in Calgary, and one in Lac La Biche.
Municipal Affairs minister Danielle Larivee also thanked the military who have helped out since last week. “But now that we are moving out of the emergency phase and into recovery, our provincial operations centre, along with the regional operations centre, determined together that Armed Forces assistance is not required at this time.”
The military helped get supplies to isolated communities, helped with the evacuations, and assisted in transportation of firefighting equipment and personnel.
She also said the area is still not safe enough for residents to return. “With a wind change, those hot spots can easily flare up. This happened Wednesday with a flare-up on MacDonald Island in Fort McMurray, and another near Anzac. Firefighters are continuing to work to put out those hot spots. But the bottom line is that these communities are not yet safe for residents to return.” (eb)
