Lower income families have until this weekend to file their tax returns and be eligible for the new Alberta child tax benefit.
Human Services Minister Irfan Sabir says the $195-million a year program will see families with annual incomes below $41,000 receive 4 cheques a year.
To qualify for the first cheques, Sabir says families must file their taxes by the deadline.
“”I encourage all lower income families to file a tax return so they can qualify for the new Alberta Child Benefit,” explains Sabir. “These benefits will improve the lives of about 130,000 Alberta families raising about 235,000 children.”
Status of Women Minister Stephanie McLean says the child tax benefit will be a big help for Alberta lower wage families.
“It will help 235,000 children living in poverty,” says McLean. “Whether they have a parent who is working, relying on income support temporarily, or unable to work because of a severe disability.”
The government is also promoting free tax filing services.
Families will start receiving benefits in July. (km/Newstalk 770)
