The City of Edmonton hopes the new Edmonton Smart Travel app will make navigating City streets a little safer for drivers.
“[The app] will provide verbal alerts to drivers about traffic safety issues,” says Dennis Tetreault with the Office of Traffic Safety. “It will warn drivers when there are school zones approaching and when there is a change in the speed limit zone. It also lets them know where there are high collision locations and where they can expect to encounter pedestrians on the roadway.”
Tetreault says the app also informs the driver of incoming weather patterns and complies with all the regulations required under distracted driving laws.
The app will be showcased at the International Conference on Urban Traffic Safety, taking place at the Shaw Conference Centre from Monday to Wednesday.
The app which was built with the help of the U of A Centre for Smart Transportation, will be free of charge and is expected to be available for download in mid May. de
